DraftDr. Blog Introduction

Welcome to my daily fantasy sports blog. Here we gain unique insight into professional sports player performance using advanced analytics. These are new analytics that my company developed. They have been tested in the real world. They work. But this is legalized gambling and you win some you lose some. It is best to be well informed in any case. You will find some easy to use "top ten lists" and metrics that can help you gain knowledge on upcoming fantasy sports contests. For now we focus on Fan Duel, but we plan on incorporating these metrics for Draft Kings, Draft Day, and Yahoo Daily Fantasy Sports Contests.

There are five unique metrics (described below) that have "top ten player lists" on this site.  (1) UnderValued; (2) OverValued; (3) Trending; (4) Price Change Percentage; (5) Expert Selections; and (6) Strategic Advice.

Value Players are those that are relatively cheap on your fantasy site. What we do here is to take the standardized average value of other site player prices and subtract this "Average Other Site" Salary from the Fan Duel Salary of each player. We then convert this into a discount rate, which is the percent off the standard retail price for that player. Thus a player has a "Discount Price" based on the relative salary on other daily fantasy sports sites. Look at it this way: Why buy a product (say ice cream) at your local gas station, when you can buy the same product much cheaper at the WalMart across the street? The ice cream is the same, why pay more? This is not to say that the player will not perform, but that they are relatively expensive your fantasy site (in this case, Fan Duel). There are two ways to look at value: On the one hand, we have "Undervalued" Players - these are the ones you can get on the cheap; On the other hand, we have the "Overvalued" Players - these are the ones you should avoid. Each Top Ten List of UnderValued and OverValued Players are ranked and specified by the relative discount rate for each player. Look for those with the greater discounts. Avoid the ones that are priced well above MSRP.

Trending Players are those that were popular in a previous large contest. For example,  Rob Gronkowski if was on 49.7% of the teams chosen in the previous week, Gronk would be "Trending High." Meanwhile, if Marvin Jones Jr. was only on x% of the teams and scored 35 points, then he should be "Trending Up." Such lists are meant to report recent trends. It employs statistical data mining in establishing current patterns. Look for "diamonds in the rough" here.

Price Change Percentage: Fantasy Sports Stats Sites provide the $change of a player from contest to contest. Here we simply convert this into a percentage, which is more accurate and useful. For example, if both Rob Gronkowski and Marvin Jones Jr. both go up $500 in price, the percentage increase for Jones would be higher because he was originally cheaper than Gronk. Big percentage swings on lower priced players are more significant. Couple this statistic with Trending Players for a more complete view of current trends.

Expert Selections are sample teams from our area experts provide. I liken it to going to the horse races, when you bought selections from the area tipster (e.g., "Duke's Sheet"). Use them for what they are worth: Mostly to build a team with few of your favorites sprinkled in.  You need to distinguish yourself. Put your own unique spin on a team.

Strategy Advice: We provide a lesson in strategic management that will help in your general game planning. Sometimes you have to step outside your box. Collect them over time, they will help you. For example, leave $100 leftover salary - it helps distinguish your team in big contests. Consider this section as tidbits of wisdom from a systems' perspective.
